The earthsea cycle6/28/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I didn’t see why everybody in heroic fantasy had to be white (and why all the leading women had ‘violet eyes’). As Le Guin wrote in 2004 responding to the adaptation’s whitewashing, “I didn’t see why everybody in science fiction had to be a honky named Bob or Joe or Bill. The priestess Tenar (in some ways the real protagonist of the Earthsea books) has white skin, but only because she hails from the faraway Kargish lands, full of barbarians and people ignorant of magic. Ged has red-brown skin, as does his royal young friend Prince Arren and most of their other associates. Very few characters in Earthsea have white skin. Speaking of the awful Earthsea adaptation, there is actually one major element of the series that both Rowling and Paolini eschewed, and showed Le Guin to be far ahead of her time. ![]()

Naga Say Never by Kylie Marcus6/28/2023 ![]() So, in the middle of the night, I make a run for it. ![]() Except, a nunnery is the last place I want to be. I don't want to hurt her, but I also don't want to give her up.Īfter marrying into a demon mafia, my sister sent me away to "protect" me. I'm a monster with primal urges I can't control. She should know while she's buying throw pillows, I'm imagining throwing her over my shoulder. and she has no idea I'm living here with her.įrom what I can tell, she's hiding from something, and she has no idea I'm watching her.īut the longer I wait, the more she makes herself comfortable, and before long, I realize I can't keep hiding in the shadows. Then, one day, my front door opens, and in walks the most beautiful creature I've ever seen. ![]() After all, everyone's afraid of snakes-even other monsters. After I was turned into a Naga by a punch gone wrong, I slithered back to my home and kept to myself. ![]()

The Betrayals by Bridget Collins6/28/2023 ![]() I entered into this university semester as a seriously sleep-deprived wreck because I just could not stop listening to the audiobook until I knew how it ended, even though it was already well past one a.m. In all honesty, it’s probably been a few years since I’ve loved a book as much as I loved this one. Readers who will be slowly ensnared by everything this book has to offer. You’d probably end up hating it with a passion, if you even managed to get through it without boring yourself into DNFing it □Īnd then there are readers like me. All you plot-driven readers who detest open endings and need explanations for everything – this book is not for you. ![]() In a way, it’s kind of like a short story: There is a lot hidden beneath that tip of the iceberg, numerous questions that will forever go unanswered. In fact, after having read the entire book, I still can’t tell you exactly where and when this is set, although I do have my suspicions. The first couple of chapters, you will probably be hopelessly confused as to what is going on, who these characters are, and when the events that are being narrated are taking place. ![]() ![]() The Betrayals is a book that sneaks up on you. “These are the times that scare her the most, the beginnings and endings: this is when the world is most unpredictable.” ![]()

Hidden empire orson scott card6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() There's an alright story in there but I didn't enjoy it anywhere near the amount I did the earlier opening book with the religious aspect wedged in there which didn't seem to add anything to the story beyond lecturing. It's like they're the boogeyman and the author is displaying his prejudices, likewise there's a chapter opening where people who care about the environment and global warming are decreed as being, essentially terrible people with bad judgement. ![]() This time it's about a virus outbreak in Africa and the extension of American power, yet there's also considerable religious under & overtones to this book which I don't remember there being in the earlier volume. For example the entire drive of one of the main plot points is for Americans to go to Africa to nurse the infected because that's what good Christians do, and I can't help but feel there's a subtle dig towards Islam the way there's such an overwhelming volume of pro-Christianity references yet the only time Islam is brought up it's when the Nigerians are massacring civilians and stealing resources. ![]() I read the first volume of this series five years ago and thought it was a pretty good story, about an attempted coup in America. ![]()

Solimar by Pam Muñoz Ryan6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() On its face, the tale is fast paced and contains all the exciting elements of a traditional adventure story: a princess, a kingdom, a villain, witches, magic and a quest. Solimar: The Sword of the Monarchs is written for ages 8 to 12 but may be enjoyed by readers of all ages. Solimar, being the brave princess-to-be that she is, sets out to warn her father and brother of the dangers that await. The remaining villagers are taken hostage-all except Solimar. This alone would be a huge responsibility, but tragedy strikes when a neighboring king invades while her father and brother and many others are away. She has also become a protector of the young and weak butterflies. After the magical frenzy, she realizes she's been given a gift-and a burden: she can predict the near future. There, the sun pierces through a sword-shaped crevice in a boulder, which shines on her and sends the butterflies humming and swirling around her. ![]() On the brink of her Quinceañera – the celebration of a young girl’s 15th birthday – and her official coronation, Solimar visits the oyamel forest to sit among the monarch butterflies. Pam Muñoz Ryan's Solimar: The Sword of the Monarchs will excite and uplift readers as they join the young Solimar in this tale of a magical, fictional kingdom in Mexico where longing, adventure, transformation and discovery are at the fore. ![]() ![]() Can a princess-to-be save her family, the kingdom and the future of the kingdom’s treasured monarch butterflies from a greedy and dangerous king? ![]()

Traci lords 19836/27/2023 ![]() ![]() Today Mitchell is the director of the Adult Industry Medical Healthcare Foundation, the main organization charged with STD testing of adult models in California. Porn legend Sharon Mitchell has claimed that she made her first adult movie six months before her 18th birthday back in the '70s, though some doubt her claim and the film was never pulled. Here's a short and horrible history of underage porn scandals. While this case so far has only attracted civil lawsuits and no previous similar high-profile cases have occurred in Florida or featured a girl quite so young, the history of prosecution of porn companies who found themselves in similar situations has mixed results. RK Netmedia, producers of the popular Reality Kings network of sites, finds themselves in hot legal water for producing and shortly posting a movie called Cum Fiesta allegedly featuring a 15-year-old runaway billed as "Bieyanka Moore". ![]() ![]() Child porn is a cut-and-dry legal situation, but rare cases where an underage performer deceives otherwise legitimate producers of adult pornography by producing forged legal documents has a much more murky legal history. ![]()

Stars above meyer6/27/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() (Everybody loves watching deleted scenes from movies.) These are the scenes that are the basis of the fairy tales: Red Riding Hood's journey to her grandmother's house, the witch locking Rapunzel in the tower, and the wicked stepmother thrusting Cinderella into the cold kitchen and making her work. ![]() Some people may be annoyed that there is no "advancement" to the stories we already know these little events in their lives. The stories here are cutting-room-floor deleted scenes from Cinder, Scarlett, and Cress. Love, love, love this addition! Always ready to read more about my friends whom I miss now that the series is over. The last part is a preview of the new series Marissa Meyers is coming out with. ![]() The couple is who I thought it would be, which makes me happy. Something Old, Something New, or Stars Above. A new story that doesn't have anything to do with the main story. Crescent beginnings, be careful what you wish for. Wolf's induction genetic modification and to the Queens Army. Cinders arrival to Earth and the beginning years with Scarlett. The stories make me want to reread the whole series over again, although most are stories we know, only they are expounded upon in depth here, the real jewel is the last story. ![]()
